Artist statement
I'm an Artist Blacksmith specialising in metal sculpture, and working primarily in steel. Having grown up on my family’s farm I am inspired by the natural world and its wildlife, and it is this appreciation for my surroundings that informs my practice.
I create hand forged, one-off metal sculptures using traditional blacksmithing techniques, intended for both interior and garden display. My pieces depict the perceived character, ideas and atmospheres associated with different animals, inspired by Palaeolithic art as a simplistic yet instantly recognisable way of illustrating animal forms. I am intrigued by these intangible attributes and enjoy the challenge of capturing them in the enduring and tactile medium of metal. Having graduated from Plymouth College of Art with a degree in sculptural metals, my practice currently comprises three series of work: life sized sculptures of native British wildlife, my smaller glass mounted “cave sculptures” depicting ice age creatures, and tectonic inspired copper-lined bowls. I also accept commissions and have worked with a range of different materials in the past, including bronze, copper and stainless steel.
